Today I finally finished building my home server.

The original plan was actually much simpler.

I brought an ASUS motherboard back from Canada and planned to build the whole machine around it.

After spending enough time trying to save it, I finally accepted the obvious:

It was dead.

It usually cannot.

So I bought a used MSI B450M Mortar and rebuilt the plan around a Ryzen 5 2600.

The final configuration is:

  • Ryzen 5 2600
  • MSI B450M Mortar
  • 16GB DDR4, 8GB × 2 dual-channel
  • 1TB SSD
  • 8TB HDD × 2
  • Radeon RX 6600
  • Super Flower Golden Green 450W
  • Open-frame case

But it is enough for what I actually need.

Minecraft server.

NAS storage.

Docker services.

Website builds.

And whatever questionable self-hosted project I decide to install next.

The most interesting part is the cost.

  • CPU: 170 RMB
  • Motherboard: 130 RMB
  • Power supply: 50 RMB
  • Case: 30 RMB

The GPU was free.

The 1TB SSD came from an old machine.

The two 8TB hard drives were given to me.

The two 8GB memory sticks were also reused parts.

Total cash spent:

380 RMB

But that is also the point of this machine.

It was not built from a perfect shopping list.

It was built from old parts, used parts, free parts, and a few cheap replacements.

The case is an open-frame design.

It is easy to work on, easy to cool, and extremely cheap.

It also collects dust with impressive efficiency.

So the cooling system became another project by itself.

For now, the server is running Linux and already hosts my Minecraft server.

The next steps are NAS storage, backups, Docker services, and more self-hosted tools.

But it works.

And after the dead motherboard, the rewiring, the storage setup, and all the small problems in between, that is enough.

My home server is finally alive.
